Zip lining is one of the most popular tourist activities in Costa Rica. Before this trip, I had never zip lined before, but it had always been near the top of my “to do” list, so it seemed like the ideal time to try it.
I was staying at a Bed & Breakfast owned by Bombero Adventures and the owner (Gary), told me about the zip lining tours he does. They offer two different course options, regular and extreme. Originally, I was going to go on the regular course since it was my first time (and I am scared of heights), but Gary convinced me otherwise. The extreme course is higher, faster and you get to zip line “superman style”, which sounded like a lot of fun to me. I will be high up either way so I might as well try it, right?
Once I got geared up, I hopped in the back of the truck and we started driving up the hill to the start of the extreme zip line course. At some point we stopped to drop people off at the regular course level and then kept on going higher and higher. Needless to say this was making me a little nervous. Erm.. how much higher are we going to go? Eventually, we get to the top, I got off the truck and started to go into full blown panic mode. We were over 400 feet high!! As they started to strap me in, I almost backed out, actually to be completely honest, I almost started to cry (what a baby!). The person who strapped me in asked me if I was ready, as he was about to send me off, however I didn’t respond. I was freaking out too much. He told me to let go of the wire, but I was clinging on for dear life. I didn’t know if I was going to have the guts to do this after-all. Finally, I said to myself.. screw it!!! Let’s go!!
I was screaming at first, but then immediately calmed down. This is amazing!! I’m flying like superman!! After I got to the end of the first course, the subsequent courses were a breeze. I wasn’t nervous at all and I was having an absolute blast. Once I was at a lower level, the workers started to hook me into a different contraption. Hmmm. I don’t see another zip line cable though. Gary comes walking over with a huge smirk, “Now is when the real fun happens”. Huh? Then I realized, I’m going to be dropped straight down! I had no idea that was part of it. I guess I should have asked more questions before saying “yes” to the extreme course! As usual, I started freaking out. I had a good time on the zip line, so maybe I will enjoy this. I was pulled up to 80 feet and dropped straight down! I think my parents heard me screaming back in New York. Talk about a heart pounding experience!
Here comes Gary, smirking again. I’ve come to learn that’s a sign of something terrifying to come. “Ever been on a Tarzan swing?”. I started getting pulled up 80 feet again to a platform at the top of a tree. Well, here we go again! During the initial drop, I was screaming my head off but then came to an ease. What a blast! After that was over I was wondering what was next. I was waiting for Gary to come over with another smirk but then they started to unhook me. Whew, I made it through!
Now it was time for some relaxing fun, playing with monkeys! I got to hold and pet a lovely little monkey called Lola, who I instantly fell in love with. She was such a sweet little critter.
I see Gary smirking again. Dun, dun dun. “Want to hold a boa?” he says. Apparently this is Christine’s day to face her biggest fears. One of the workers came out with two baby Boa’s. He then places one in my arms and another round my neck. I forced out a smile for the photo op and then kindly gave them back. These, they can keep.
This whole experience was one of the most memorable throughout all of my travels. I’m so happy and grateful that Gary suckered me into doing the extreme course. If I went with any other company, I think I would have just gone on the regular course. There’s no way I would have chosen the extreme option on my own. Not only did I have an amazing time, but I challenged myself and faced a couple of my biggest fears. I am so proud of myself and now that I survived in one piece, I am more open to try even more thrill seeking activities. Granted, I will probably still scream and panic at the beginning! Thank you Gary and Bombero Adventures for a truly unforgettable experience. I loved every minute of it!
Thank you to Bombero Adventures for providing my tour. All opinions are, as always, my own.
