Traveling solo in a foreign country can be intimidating and scary at times, so I decided to stay at a Bed & Breakfast owned by Bombero Adventures while visiting Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. I figured it would be nicer to stay with people that are familiar with the area rather than a hotel. Picking this B&B was one of the best decisions I have ever made on my travel. Not only was the owner Gary a great host, but after my stay I feel like we are genuinely friends. I get the feeling that the majority of his guests go away with a similar feeling.
Even before I arrived, you could tell that Gary wanted me to have the best trip possible. For example he called me to see if I would like to be picked up from the airport and what kind of things I was interested in doing on my trip. His tour company (Bombero Adventures), were able to arrange some great tours for me. I was a little apprehensive about what I was going to do on my trip alone, but before I knew it, I had a great itinerary planned! Once I was picked up at the airport, we took the scenic route back to the Bed and Breakfast, so that I had a tour of the area and an idea of places to go and see in more detail.
We then arrived at the B&B where I was greeted by his adorable rescue dog, Ellie. As I walked in, the first thing I saw was a pool deck with a view one could only imagine seeing in a movie. He gave me a tour of the house and brought my luggage upstairs to my room, which certainly did not disappoint. He has two guest bedrooms, both have their own private bathroom as well as an amazing view. One even has a balcony with a telescope so you can sit outside and gaze up at the stars. He also has another house next door with three bedrooms in case you want to rent the house with friends or if he does not have room at the main house.
After I got settled in, he gave me a cell phone which he gives to all of his guests for safety. Since I was traveling alone, it gave me a sense of relief and security to know that I had a phone in case of an emergency. He had already programmed his number into the speed dial and offered his assistance in case I needed anything, even just a silly question. He then invited me to go out with himself and his friends for dinner since some of them are in a band and were performing that night. Everyone was extremely friendly and I had a great first night thanks to him (and many after)! I’ve come to realize during my trip, that this is just how Gary is. He does not just rent you a room, he befriends you and goes above and beyond to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. I ended up hanging out with Gary, his friends and other tenants a lot during my stay. It felt like I was initiated into a big family.
My first morning was hard since breakfast is served every morning at 8am which killed me at first since I am not a morning person. I could have slept through it, but I couldn’t pass on the yummy meals. Everyday he has a woman named Evelyn come in to make an authentic Costa Rican breakfast and each day was something different and delicious. I am not surprised considering Gary goes food shopping every morning, so the breakfast is as fresh as it could possibly be!
The area itself is incredibly convenient, as everything is within walking distance. The beach (which is stunning) is only a 5 minute walk and once you are on the beach, everything you need is there. Hermosa has a number of restaurants and they tend to be a lot cheaper than restaurants in other areas of Costa Rica that I’ve been to. You can also go to another beach called Playas del Coco which is only a 10 minute ride if you have a car, or alternatively it is a $12 cab ride. Playa del Coco also has a lot of restaurants and bars.
Many of the most popular tours and places to visit are nearby, such as Rincón de la Vieja National Park, Palo Verde National Park and if you are feeling ultra adventurous Nicaragua is only 2 hours away! During my stay in Hermosa, I went extreme zip lining and hiked to a breathtaking waterfall in Rincón la Vieja National Park with his tour company. You can click here to read about my zip lining experience as well.
I couldn’t have imagined staying anywhere else or ask for anything more. If you go to this area of Costa Rica, staying at Bombero Adventures Bed & Breakfast is a must! Gary literally knows everyone in Costa Rica and and everything about it which made it so easy to figure out where to go and what to do. We would even joke around calling him the Mayor of Hermosa. I was leaving to go to Tamarindo after my stay with him and he actually drove me there, plus he gave me some great advice about the area. What other places have you stayed, where you can truly say that you felt at home? Thank you Gary and Bombero Adventures for making my experience an incredible one, I will be back!
Thank you to Bombero Adventures for providing my stay. All opinions are, as always, my own.
