Over the last decade Abu Dhabi has become an increasingly popular place to visit. It is the capital of United Arab Emirates and as such has plenty to offer tourists and business visitors alike. When you have so many choices it can be hard to decide what to narrow your activities down to. To help you out, I have picked out what I deem to be the best things to do in Abu Dhabi.
This hospital provides veterinary health care for falcons. Not only do you obviously get to see falcons, but you learn many interesting facts about them and falconry. One thing that surprised me was that the females are higher in demand for falconry, because they are bigger and better hunters than the males. Who would have thought!? Another fun fact is that they need a visa to fly (on a plane, of course!). The tour also allows you to watch as they groom a falcon, so that you can see how well they are taken care of. And yes, you even get to hold one!
How does camel riding, sand dune bashing, sand surfing, henna tattoos, Arabian food and a belly dancing show sound? You get to do all of this in one day on your desert safari, it is truly an unforgettable experience. I had an amazing time during my trip with Arabian Nights Village, which you can read about here! Make sure to add this to your list of things to do in Abu Dhabi, no matter where your interest lie.
Sheikh Zayed Mosque
One of the most jaw dropping places I have ever seen. It has elaborate designs from floor to ceiling, almost everywhere you look. Everything here has a meaning and reasoning behind it, which truly adds to the overall experience. If you do visit, I would suggest that you take the free walking tour, which you can check the times for on the main website. It makes the experience far more rounded, as you learn interesting facts, such as the carpet in the mosque is the largest in the world and hand sewn. Another is that the chandelier is meant to resemble a date palm tree, which is the country’s fruit and opens up so that someone is able to go inside to clean it.
If you are not able to stay in this magnificent five star palace, it is still worth visiting. Stop in to observe the beautiful decor or perhaps indulge in some high tea or dine at one of the delicious restaurants. If you are wondering what it is like to stay here, check out my luxurious experience.
For some, entertaining things to do in Abu Dhabi will be at the top of your list. Located on Yas Island which is about 25 minutes way, it is a true dream world for car lovers. There are showrooms throughout the park featuring different Ferrari models. Even if you aren’t into cars, the park is a full amusement park with multiple rides including the fastest roller coaster in the world. All of the rides are themed after Ferrari, therefore, geared to get your adrenaline pumping!
Day trip to Al Ain
If you’re into historical things to do in Abu Dhabi, go back to where the UAE as an entity started, as this is where the UAE ‘s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is from. Learn the country’s history and see how it all began while visiting the Al Ain National Museum or observe the beautiful oasis areas. His former palace is now turned into the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum,so you can get a true feel for the culture and see how him and his family lived. It is about an hour and a half from Abu Dhabi. You can book a tour, rent a car or take the bus.
