You cannot go to the UAE without booking an Abu Dhabi desert safari! During my trip to Abu Dhabi, I went on a once in a lifetime experience at the Arabian Nights Village. Over an hour outside of the main city, is an entire Arabian themed village, which started off with a camel ride next to some literally awe inspiring sand dunes. How many people can say they rode a camel in the Arabian Desert? I know I can!!
Then, I hopped into a Land Rover for a white knuckle drive through the sand dunes. Our driver sped through the desert, driving up and down the sand dunes and making sharp turns while doing so. We had the radio playing loud, while laughing and singing along. It was a total blast!
Once we got to a specific place, we got out and did a little sand dune surfing. It seemed hard to stand up on the board, so I sat and slid down. Good choice on my part because even though I was sat down, I kept falling off until I got the hang of it. To top off the experience, as we were surfing, the sun was started to set, which resulted in quite simply the perfect desert sunset. Once we finished sand dune surfing we got back into the Land Rovers, which sped us back to the village.
When we returned to the village, I got my first ever henna tattoo. The woman who drew the tattoo made a beautiful design on my hand, which lasted about 8 days. I wish it had stayed on longer!
After all the activities, it was time to eat. Dinner was served outside in a buffet style, which included a variety of authentic Arabian dishes. In the middle of the dinner area there was a stage where there was live entertainment playing while we ate. The show included belly dancing, where at one point, the dancer brought me onto the stage to teach me how to belly dance. It may look easy, but I can assure you it most definitely is not. Safe to say, I failed miserably at it, but at least I had a good time trying!
At the end the night, they shut all the lights off in the village, so that you can stare up at the stars. I’ve never seen so many! It was absolutely mesmerizing. I could have laid outside the entire night and stared at them. Maybe next time I will just bring a sleeping bag and camp outside.
**I worked with the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority during my trip and on this Abu Dhabi desert safari – however, all opinions are my own.
